Objectives


The objectives of the workshop are to introduce skills, concepts and strategies to:

• Review the definition of project requirements, the role of the business analyst, and the requirements cycle so that participants can understand the roles of requirements planning and elicitation
• Introduce participants to the roles and responsibilities of business analysts as they undertake requirements planning
• Identify methods and processes of project management that can assist the business analyst build an effective requirements plan
• Provide a deeper analysis of the methods of requirements elicitation than is available in other Babbage Simmel BA courses
• Provide training that is consistent with the BABOK™
• Build the capabilities of participants so that they can successfully develop and manage project requirements and be a productive and contributing member of project teams
• Engage participants in interactive exercises designed to build their skills and confidence
• Familiarize participants with best practices in requirements planning and elicitation


Outline

Day 1:

• Module 1: Introduction to the workshop

This module introduces participants to the workshop, details the workshop schedule, and provides participants an opportunity to introduce themselves and identify their expectations.

• Module 2: Review
o The IIBA and the role of the business analyst
o The definition of requirements and the challenges of requirements management
o The definition of good requirements
o The requirements cycle

This module provides an overview and review of many key topics related to business analysis and requirements management. It is designed to bring those who have not attended prior workshops up to speed on key concepts and to provide a fast refresher for those who have but who may require review in order to apply these concepts to the new material.

• Module 3: The nexus between project management and requirements management

This module explores in depth the key project management skills necessary for requirements planning. It gives participants in-depth knowledge of project management processes that they will employ to create the requirements plan and identifies the elements of that plan.

• Module 4: Requirements planning and management

This module presents the IIBA’s material and content with regard to requirements planning and management. It supplements the material presented in the prior module.

• Module 5: Requirements elicitation overview and techniques for requirements elicitation
o Brainstorming
o Document analysis
o Focus groups
o Interface analysis
o Interviews
o Job shadowing
o Prototyping
o Requirements workshops
o Reverse engineering
o Surveys/questionnaires
o User task analysis
o Usage pattern tracking

This module presents the 12 requirements elicitation methods identified by the IIBA. It allows hands-on exploration of the most important of those methods and describes the strengths and weaknesses of each. By the conclusion of this active module, participants will understand how to choose and deploy effective requirements elicitation strategies.

• Module 6: Workshop wrap-up

This module gives participants the opportunity to ask remaining questions and evaluate the workshop.
