Objectives


The objectives of the workshop are to introduce skills, concepts and strategies to:
• Introduce students to the underlying fundamentals of business analysis
• Provide training that is consistent with the BABOK™ version 1.6
• Provide comprehensive coverage of the enterprise analysis components of the BABOK™, and those skill sets regarded by the IIBA as foundational to business analysis
• Prepare participants to participate effectively in a variety of organizational processes that require sound analysis
• Provide participants with an understanding of the various methods and tools used by business analysts to support the organization
• Allow participants to interact with one another and to apply the skills they have learned
• Allow participants to apply the concepts they have learned to their own work environments through the use of case studies based on existing or potential projects
• Provide a base of knowledge for additional business analysis learning, either self-directed or otherwise

Outline

Day 1:

• Module 1: Introduction to Business Analysis (BA)
– Definition of BA roles and responsibilities
– The emerging BA profession including the IIBA certification program
– Definition of requirements

This module introduces the subject, describes the course layout, and allows participants to get to know one another. It describes the emergence of the IIBA and its role in professionalizing the profession and describes the appropriate role for business analysts in critical projects. Last, it describes the definition of requirements and engages participants in an exercise to identify “good” requirements.

• Module 2: Business analysis skill sets
– Communications
– Meeting management
– Conflict management
– Writing requirements

This module describes critical skill sets for business analysts and the importance of communications in the requirements management process. It provides best practices and hands-on practice in the use of some of the most critical skill sets, including conflict management.

Day 2:

• Module 3: The requirements cycle

This module presents the IIBA’s requirements cycle with special emphasis on the role of enterprise analysis within that cycle.

• Module 4: The BABOK™ definition of enterprise analysis
– Strategic planning
– Organizational architecture
– Conducting the feasibility study
– Building the business case

This module explores the IIBA’s definition of enterprise analysis and the activities undertaken by the business analyst to support the functions and processes of the organization. It pays special attention to feasibility studies and the preparation of the business case.

• Module 5: Tools for business analysis
– Strategic planning
– Project management
– Financial analysis and modeling
– Linking projects and strategies and selecting and prioritizing projects

This module, which will carry over into the next day, describes four critical tools for effective business analysis, tools that supplement the activities undertaken to elicit and analyze requirements for projects.

Day 3:

• Module 5: Tools for business analysis (continued)
• Module 6: Workshop capstone exercise

This module engages participants in an interactive exercise to apply the skills and methods they have been exposed to in this workshop.

• Module 7: Workshop wrap-up

This module provides participants with the ability to ask remaining questions and evaluate the workshop.
